Black Holes & Revelations ~ Muse
Release Date: 3rd July 2006
Examples: Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole
1) Take A Bow - 'What we've become is contrary to what we want'
An epic introduction to the album, combining guitar, keyboard and trance-based riffs and textures, introducing the futuristic sci-fi feel to the album
2) Starlight - 'I will never let you go, if you promise not to fade away'
Somewhere balanced between the heavier and softer zones of rock, Starlight relies on a keyboard riff, using a happy-sounding tone of music. Black Holes and Revelations is mentioned in this song.
3) Supermassive Black Hole - 'Oh baby I'm a fool for you'
A perfect example of the band's experimental style. Matt uses a falsetto technique with his voice, creating an operatic style of sound. The track consists of a strong and memorable guitar riff and a sci-fi sounding solo, with a distorted repeat of the song title.
4) Map of the Problematique - 'Fear and panic in the air'
The drums, guitar and keyboard effects make this another memorable track, placing it in the same category of rock as Starlight. A memorable chorus, a song that remains fairly similar throughout its entirety.
5) Soldier's Poem - 'There's no justice in the world, and there never was'
The drum pattern echoes a soft military-like rhythm and sound, with a ironically happy piano backin - given the negative lyrics. This short song describes the reality of war and the fact that soldiers are merely tools of the government. A particularly good back-up vocal harmony.
6) Invincible - 'Please, please let's use this chance to turn things around'
Another military based drum pattern with a louder and different style, along with a special effect used on guitar to give an echoey feel. Invincible is a somewhat indie track, with a surprising solo on guitar towards the end of the song, involving a complex style of guitar tapping - that, again, emphasises the sci-fi feel of the album.
7) Assassin - 'Whatever they say, these people are torn'
Partially comparable to Stockholm Syndrome, Assassin is a heavier track that relies on a strong drum backing and a strong guitar riff, describing the birth of an assassin.
8) Exo Politics - 'I have waited patiently, I wait for a sign'
Exo Politics uses another strong drum pattern aided by a guitar riff, that deals with the band's views on politics and society, relating to those in power. Matt stretches his voice in pitch, to intensify these views, aided by the backing
9) City of Delusion - 'I choose to hide from the all seeing eye'
City of Delusion uses many different instruments and effects to dazzle the listener, including an unexpected mexican trumpet solo towards the end! Another unusual set of lyrics packed with a hundred and one metaphores, makes this song another effectively-unusual attraction in the album
10) Hoodoo - 'You're protected from trouble and pain'
Using a spanish style of guitar, the song opens quietly, climaxes and then finishes softly. Errie lyrics and an eerie feel make Hoodoo effective, and acts as a clever contrast to the song that follows it.
11) Knights of Cydonia - 'No one's going to take me alive'
The dramatic finish to the album that sums up the band's experimental style. Knights of Cydonia uses basic lyrics matched with awesome texture to blow the listener's mind, with 'horse'-paced rhythms and galloping melodies, matched with a mind-blowing guitar solo that serves as a finale
12) Glorious - 'Don't close the door, on what you adore'
The bonus track not available on standard albums. This addition to BH&R uses a keyboard and guitar riff, along with an unusual but effective set of lyrics to create an interesting sci-fi based sound that could be compared to Starlight
